THE POWER OF MUSIC

Listening to music for some are out of habit or for workout and for some are a way to relax, be inspire or be uplifted. The result also varies but the commonest reaction to music is joy and happiness or a break into dancing. For me, it’s a mix of all. I grew up listening to music. From Dad playing a lot of Don Moen to Mom singing for us and my Uncle playing his “Amonotete mabo.” (I’m sure the yoruba people will crucify me but hey, I am just an Ijaw-Apoi girl who can’t speak yoruba) In all of this, I was quite choosy about the music I heard.

Fast forward to school of architecture where music is defined as liquid architecture. There was virtually no studio in school that had students working in them without music on. Except when we were studying for courses other than design. Now the genre of music that worked for me during those nights and days of design and drawings was Jazz. To be specific – Yanni’s songs.

At night, to relax and fall asleep, I resulted to Gospel songs which carried within it’s lyrics great messages. These songs inspired me to pray and make commitments to God. Some other times, I found comfort for my aching hearts. School days for me were filled with rollercoasters of emotions and music seemed to be how I relaxed, got inspired or uplifted. My roommates got used to me sleeping with my music on.

Now circular songs with time beats are my go to for workouts that I need to do on a timed fashion. These are the only times I get to listen to circular songs and even at that, the lyrics must be like a story and not have curse or vulgar words.

As an Architect, I can confidently say, my best productive time is when I’m away in my design world with my ears blocked. The design for some reason flows and new ideas emerge. I work long hours and through the night easily once a music is playing right in my ears. I’m very sure, so many in my field can attest to this.

As a Christian writer, I find myself always lost in the presence of God when penning down my thoughts and meditations with music in the background.

As a Human being, I find the tears flowing uncontrollably most times when I listen to music as well. And other times, I find I go about the chores at home quickly and productively when I have on my music.

In all of these, I am very intentional about the kind of music I listen to because even when I am by myself, my subconscious will just start playing the music. lol. Most interestingly, I have toddlers who are quick to pick on things and even more songs they hear as they love to sing.

If you come to visit me and you must play music, it has to be kid friendly like “Baby Shark” or gospel music. I want my children dreaming and singing uplifting song in their dreams and glorifying God. Yes.

Even now as I write this down, I am accompanied by “My Roving Hearts by All Sons & Daughters (One Artist I’ve fallen in love with and their songs does all for me from relaxing to inspiring to uplifting to workouts to dancing and even to sobering) They are on iTunes if you’ll like to check them out. https://music.apple.com/ng/album/my-roving-heart/1126781951?i=1126781975

So beautiful, what kind of music works for you? Does anything go?

Enjoy your weekend.

Blessings and Beauty.

BEAUTIFUL WIVES PRAYER CHALLENGE 5.0

Yeeey!!!

So I am very excited and just thankful to God. To think that it all started with me praying in private for my marriage, my husband and my home; I am beyond grateful to God.

In 2016 (2 years after I began), seeing results and hearing of so many challenges wives go through, it was put in my heart to challenge other wives. And this challenge has been on since then.

Are you ready to pray? Are you ready to decree and declare?

This year, God desires I learn from women in the Bible. And I am inviting you on board. We’ll learn from them and pray with understanding for ourselves.

“So Phebe, won’t we pray for our homes, our children and our husband?”

Oh yes we will.

However, we will focus on ourselves more. Just like the theme says.

So come along, let the Father pamper us.

Please share and invite as many wives and wives-to-be.

Blessings and Beauty.

7 THINGS TO PRAY ABOUT EVERYDAY

Prayer, as we all know in simple terms is talking to God. While it sounds simple and may look simple, it seem to be the hardest exercise for many.

You often hear statements and questions like these. “What do I pray for? How often do I have to pray? I can’t find a quiet place to pray. My children are always disturbing me. I wake up late.” And so many things.

Beautiful people, know this. 24hours is not enough for many of us. But to thrive and go through those 24hrs successfully and productively, you have to give atleast 1minute to God. All the more better when you give more. Jesus our perfect example who walked amongst us, was recorded in scriptures waking up early to pray. I believe at that time, He also had 24hours like us.

Wondering what to pray about? Here are 7 things to pray about each day.

  1. Thank God for a new day and ask that His will be done on earth in your life as it is in Heaven.
  2. Ask him to provide everything you need for the day. Food , water, strength, wisdom, everything.
  3. Ask for grace to forgive as many who will offend you and also for forgiveness from God and others who you may unknowingly offend.
  4. Ask God to open your eyes to see clearly and run away from every temptation.
  5. Pray for deliverance from every evil. The Bible says, “sufficient for a day are the evils there off.”
  6. Pray for your spouse and children (if married.) Pray for extended family members, friends and acquaintances.
  7. Give glory to God, thanking Him for listening and answering your prayers.

As you can tell, the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6 is a very straightforward blueprint of how we can pray each day.

Until I write to you next on our attitude to prayers. Ensure to grow your prayer life by praying these 7 prayers everyday.

God bless you.

9/19 – TRIBUTE TO MY SISTER AND BEST FRIEND

TOLUWA (as we fondly call you.) I remember our childhood days and how much we always looked like twins because you just kept growing taller and for a long time, we were the same height. Even more, we always wore the same cloths and the same styles. As much as I was older, there was a bond between us that no one and I could explain. We were best of friends.

When we went off to boarding school, I always came by to your hostel to make sure you were well. I would come check you up in class then just to be sure you were okay. When you told me, my constant checking up on you could make you a target for seniors to punish, I had to grudgingly relax a little but not completely. When I was graduating and you were going to go back to begin SS1, I remember telling you what you should do and not and was just being a bore. You knew I was not happy I was not going to be there, and you told me to relax that you would be fine and take care of yourself and yes, you did.

Every of your friend know me even though I do not know them. You always talked about me so much even though you know I am not one to easily make friends and like to be in my own space. You were a voice to me when I passed through tough times. When I wanted to react when accused wrongly and have cried my eyes out, you always told me not to say what was in my mind because you knew it will not end up exactly how it should. You were a shoulder when all I could do was cry and explain to you why things were happening the way they were.

Toluwa, you knew everything about me first and I knew same about you too. We always talked and we had a lot of principles and creeds. I remember when you shared something deep with me. Yes, it broke my heart, but you made a promise to me and till you relocated, kept it. We never fought and I wonder why. However, I remember the first and last time you got angry at me and I was surprised but I accepted my wrong and apologized and you forgave me, and we were besties again.

Oh, I just remembered something, and this put a smile on my face. Our voices. We sound alike that Dad always must ask, “Is this Phebe or Toluwa?” whenever we spoke on the phone. You always had a smiling face on and I the straight face such that everyone always wanted to be your friend. Everyone who has met you always have something lovely to say about you and this makes me happy.

When I was pregnant and very hormonal, you came to take care of me. You understood and kept up with my attitude and was still a best friend and sister. You took great care of me till you had to go to Rivers for your service. I remember all the wahala you went through trying to find a good PPA but you decided to go to where would not be anyone’s first choice, because it afforded you time to prepare and write your remaining exams to become a chartered accountant.

I know all you went through, and I bless God for you keeping calm and being Christlike during it all. When the situation got on your nerves, you will call me to vent and rant and I will just listen and encourage you.

Fast forward to 2018, when you came visiting and we talked and I opened up to you asking for your opinion and like always you being the peaceful and gentle one, you gave it to me undiluted and without mincing words. We arrived at a conclusion and I made a promise to you which I went on to fulfil. Who knew that that would be the last visit and time we sit and talk face to face?

You were always the first to wish me a happy birthday. Always early at few minutes past 12:00am.

2019 was filled with plans. Toluwa, we made plans. I still look at your signature on the documents and I cry. When the lawyer said I’ll have to make some changes, I asked for more time and I am still asking for more time. It is simply hard to make those changes. I remember that call, “Big Sis, I am having headache.” I said, “Toluwa, rest. Please rest. If anything happens to you, work will go on. Your health and your life are important.” You listened, you took time off and rested but you decided to rest in Heaven few weeks after.

I still remember the calls, the prayers, the visons. It still is like a dream sometimes and other times, it is as though you just traveled to a new country (Of which you did – Heaven) I still send you messages on WhatsApp just to let you know how much I miss you. I still go back to your text messages and read them.

I remember I called you on your birthday (3 September 2019) and wished you a happy 30th birthday and we laughed and joked and prayed even though you were in pains. We still talked about our plans and you were just waiting to feel a little better and you will be back to Lagos. You sent Booboo a hilarious birthday song and wrote, “For my princess.” She listened to it and laughed (I still go back and play it often). But we did not know you were getting ready. You knew the end was coming but you did not even tell me anything. Why? It was after you had relocated, we found out you had been preparing, because you had an inkling.

Its been a difficult ONE year. For the first time, I did not have a new year goal. I just asked God to help me because I am hurting. I smile and I put on a façade but every night, I think of you and just tell myself, you are really gone to heaven. I know it is a reunion up there. I know it.

I miss you Toluwa and it has not been the same without you on this side of heaven. I miss my best friend. We all miss you deeply and dearly. I am proud of all you did girl. I am proud of the woman you were becoming. I am happy that during your short stay over there, you still remembered our creed to always help those who genuinely need our help if we can and when we can as God helps us (this you did even as you spent your last days). You often told your friends; you learned a lot from me. If only you knew how much I learned from you. I wish I spoke to you that morning just to even say, “I love you.” Hmmmm.

I take comfort in knowing you are in Heaven. You spent your last days reading the bible and praying. I remember Big Sis telling me that you prayed through the night even in such pain and that you said, “I prayed for everyone” with a smile on your face. I asked you, “Toluwa, what are you praying for? Leave the praying to us” and you giggled. Ah… God I thank you! God, I thank you! From you are all things and to you aRE ALL THINGS! You deserve the glory. You are worthy of it all!

Keep resting in Heaven my love. I miss both of you greatly.

In loving memory of Deborah Missions Toluwalope Reju (Sept 3rd ’89 – Sept 19th ’19)

HOW’S YOUR MIND?

I’ve always wanted to share about this topic and behold, the perfect opportunity.

Yesterday was WORLD BOOK DAY and as I dropped off my children at school, almost every one was dressed up as an animal character which made my youngest very uncomfortable as she clutched to me for safety. My oldest found it funny and was excited to make animal sounds which I didn’t waste time in joining in. Anyways, that’s not the reason for today’s post.

Usually, when we inquire of the well being of others, most time we are focused on their body. Today I’ll focus on your mind. How’s your mind?

According to Wikipedia, one of the key attributes of the mind is that it is a private sphere to which no one but the owner has access. No one else can “know our mind.” They can only interpret what we consciously or unconsciously communicate

According to Psychology Today, Reading improves brain connectivity and function. Literacy Works also says and I quote, “Reading is to the mind, what exercise is to the body.”

Reading was something I learnt at a very early age. Daddy, being a lecturer and Mommy being a primary school teacher, there were a lot of books to read at home. You will always catch Dad with a book or two reading away and he never kept the information therein to himself, he always shared with us as a family.

How many of you know about the book titled – Pilgrim Progress by John Bunyan. Oh, that book was like a script in my home, as my sisters and I would often assume characters in the book and read them every night during family time. Oh how I miss those times, and I cant wait to start that tradition in my home. And I digress again.

As Christians and people of faith, reading books by other authors will do our mind and soul good. Even more, reading books of other genre. Just before you say the Bible is enough for you, let me say this. The Bible is a believer’s manual but when you want to put out fire from a building as a fire man, you need to study the fire manual to do that. So also to perform and excel in your field of study or career, you need to read books in that area.

Reading books (fiction and non fiction) transports you beyond your study or library or bedroom to a whole different world of new discoveries. It sharpens your mind and builds confidence within it’s reader.

Beyond your Bible or books in your field, read about other books like those on gardening, history, food, beauty, music, business, and even more fiction; and watch your mind grow and flourish.

If you find out that you can’t seem to concentrate on a book or you have no interest at all, try this few tips below and watch your mind go from being a desert to a flourishing garden of ideas and knowledge.

  • Find a book club. (online and offline)
  • Find a book that interests you.
  • Read a few pages immediately after your quiet time and a few more pages before bedtime.
  • Read aloud and assume a character in the book.
  • When words, phrases or paragraphs make you go hmmmmm, read them over and over again.
  • Surround yourself with like minded people and be happy to share what you’ve read once in a while.
  • Last but not the least, get your self a good book divider and highlighter.

So now, before I drop my pen (or rest my fingers in this case), I ask you again, HOW’S YOUR MIND?

Blessings.

A BEAUTIFUL 2020

Happy New Year!!!

Many of us begin each new year with resolutions, a long list of to-dos and all that but many a times, before the middle of the month of January, it looks like these resolutions have somehow developed legs and walked away. It’s okay to make resolutions, it’s okay to plan (I am an advocate of planning) but committing to it is all the more better.

As a christian, what are you committing to do this year 2020?

As an employee, employer or entrepreneur, what are you committing to do this year 2020?

As a parent, what are you committing to do this year 2020?

As a young adult, what are you committing to do this year 2020?

A popular phrase says, “If you keep doing what you always did, you will continue to get the same results you always got.”

As a community, this year 2020, we will be doing things differently. I cannot tell you right now what we will do in March or April or November; but I can tell you that please stay in the spirit, pray everyday, study the word of God everyday, read a book everyday, drink water, eat healthy, and most of all, remain at the center of the will of God for you EVERYDAY.

I shared on my social media that this month, find a word. You just pick a word and commit to it. At the end of the month, look back on how well you did. It can be a word as simple as LOVE, FOCUS, FORGIVENESS, JOY, WORSHIP etc.

Feel free to share this word with us for accountability.

My word for February is SACRIFICE. What’s yours?

I pray this year 2020 is one that we look back and say, oh what a year and what a way to end a decade.

So with this, I welcome you all to the Beautiful Life Community this year. Have a beautiful year.

Remain in God’s Love and stay beautiful.

#BWPC: DAY ELEVEN

Hello beautiful.

Welcome to day eleven.

Usually, I don’t over emphasize the Proverbs 31 woman because in truth, the woman King Solomon described there doesn’t exist. She was a “perfect woman.” And guess what, perfect women do not exist. Only Angels are perfect beings. But we can greatly learn from this rare woman who Solomon so beautifully described.

In most versions available to us, Vs. 10 started as a question, some versions started as a statement.

  • Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. (King James Version)
  • “Who can find a wife with a strong character? She is worth far more than jewels. (God’s Word Translation)
  • It is hard to [Who can…?] find a good [noble; virtuous] wife, because she is worth more than rubies [or pearls]. (EXpanded Bible)
  • How hard it is to find the perfect wife. She is worth far more than jewels. (Easy to Read Version)
  • An excellent woman [one who is spiritual, capable, intelligent, and virtuous], who is he who can find her? Her value is more precious than jewels and her worth is far above rubies or pearls. (AMPlified)
  • Who can find a capable wife? Her value is far beyond that of pearls. (Complete Jewish Bible)
  • If you can find a truly good wife, she is worth more than precious gems! (The Living Bible)

I have shared above from 7 different versions so you can understand how we will be praying. We would be using the New Century Version as we pray tonight. Now, I won’t be telling you, you should become a proverbs 31 woman, but I’ll be asking that you go through those verses and learn what it is you can do to become your own “Proverbs 31 woman” to your husband.

So you will be praying for yourself.

PRAYER POINTS.

Proverbs 31:11-31 (New Century Version)

Vs. 11 – Her husband trusts her completely. With her, he has everything he needs.

When a wife knows what her husband would need and go on to make it available, It’s easy for him to trust her completely.

  • Father, help me in my capacity to be able to provide for my husband and home, all that they need. Whatever it is that I need to have, to meet the needs of my husband and home, even if its rare and unique, Lord make available to me by yourself or through people around me. Let my husband be able to go to sleep knowing that I have his back in Jesus name.

Vs. 12 – She does him good and not harm for as long as she lives.

We don’t want our husbands to do us harm, so we must also not do them harm. As a woman, we don’t need to physically hit our husband before we harm them. Our mouths alone can do more damage that any weapon can. So as a christian wife, we must not harm our husbands in any way.

  • Father, as long as [husband’s name] and I live, to a ripe gold old age or till you return, I will bring good and do good to my husband only. I will not harm him with my words, my actions and even physically in Jesus name. [Husband’s name], you will look upon me and be rest assured that I seek only your good and no harm will come to you from me in Jesus name.

Vs. 13-15 – She looks for wool and flax and likes to work with her hands. She is like a trader’s ship, bringing food from far away. She gets up while it is still dark and prepares food for her family and feeds her servant girls.

In those day, the kitchen was built away from the main house. Usually the food has to be carried in tray all the way to the main house, that’s why she was likened to a trader’s ship. How many of you still cook for your husband to take lunch from home to work? It will be beautiful for your husband to at least wake up each morning and have breakfast prepared to eat before going out. Aside being a hospitable cook for the family, She enjoyed to work with her hands. It means she was hands on and I believe she learned a hand craft.

  • Father, I ask for a disciplined spirit to be able to wake up each morning and give food to my husband and our household in Jesus name. As I sleep, give me healthy meal ideas to prepare and make available to my household. My family will never be hungry or lack food to eat because I will rise early to prepare food for them in Jesus name. Lord help me to also put the talents you have given me to use. Help me be useful with the hands you have blessed me with in Jesus name.

Vs. 16-19 – She inspects a field and buys it. With money she earned, she plants a vineyard. She does her work with energy, and her arms are strong. She knows that what she makes is good. Her lamp burns late into the night. She makes thread with her hands and weaves her own cloth.

Now before you go looking for a land to buy or cotton to make threads or cloth, I need you to understand that the Proverbs 31 woman had a job or a business. She had something doing, from which she earned. When we prayed for jobs for our husband to be able to provide for the family. I intentionally didn’t ask you to pray for yourself. But today you will. Remember, God’s original plan when he made woman – partner, ally, companion and friend. The woman Solomon described was able to buy a land, plant a vineyard because she had something that brought in money. Whether it was, her husband paying her salary or a job outside or a business, she had something that brought money. For some of you, a job, no. A skill to monetize, no. A business, No. While we do not know exactly the kind of Job this woman had, the bible recorded that she worked into the night. She had targets, he had deadline to meet. So if you are here and you don’t do anything that brings in money or contribute to the purse of your family, you need to start now. Its not virtuous to be jobless.

  • Father, I pray for strength to be able to carry out my work (employee, employer, business owner, entrepreneur) diligently. I pray for ideas that will bring money. I pray for wisdom to learn and practice and monetize the talents you have blessed me with in Jesus name. I refuse to be a liability to my husband but a contributor, a resourceful wife and a hardworking earning wife in Jesus name.

Vs. 20 – She welcomes the poor and helps the needy.

Beyond being a wife, a mom, a worker, this woman was a humanitarian. God blesses us to be a blessing. How many people have you seen in need and helped?

  • Father, as you bless me everyday, help me to be a blessing to as many as come my way. The wisdom to identify the needy and poor people around me, I receive from you in Jesus name.

Vs. 21,22 – She does not worry about her family when it snows, because they all have fine clothes to keep them warm. She makes coverings for herself; her clothes are made of linen and other expensive material.

This super woman didn’t just stop at preparing food for her family. She went on to cater for the health of her family. She knew that if they didn’t keep warm in the winter, they would be ill, so she was proactive to prepare to protect her family from illness. Also, of note, this woman was wealthy. The bible records that she wore clothes made from expensive materials. These clothes will definitely be beautiful and not shabby. So this woman cared for how she looked. Some of you, the moment you become wives, the need to look good, attractive and presentable disappears. But it shouldn’t be so. Also, the health of our family should be our concern.

  • Father, I declare upon this altar that I will pay attention to the health of my family. What we need to do, to eat, to drink to stay healthy, I will be aware and prepared in Jesus name. Help me Lord to pay attention to myself, look good for my husband, stay attractive to my husband in Jesus name.

Vs. 23 – Her husband is known at the city meetings, where he makes decisions as one of the leaders of the land.

This verse brings to mind what my former boss told me, “Every woman is an image of the husband.” I’m sure people must have seen this woman and had to ask, “who is her husband?” And people would say, “it’s such and such who makes decisions for our land.” Now her husband was a public figure, he was well known. She represented the image of her husband well. How well do you represent the image of your husband? Do people know your husband but when they see you, get uncomfortable? Do you think this man would still remain a decision maker if his wife was representing him badly? The moment you become a wife, you begin to represent the image of God first and your husband. So you must behave well, act well and even speak well.

  • Father, I pray for myself that I will not be an embarrassment to my husband. I pray my behavior will not make my husband a laughing stock among his colleagues. I pray that who I am and what I become uplifts and showcases my husband to your glory in Jesus name. Let me not be the reason my husband looses a promotion, let me not be the reason my husband looses an opportunity and Lord, let me not be the reason my husband looses his job in Jesus name.

Vs. 24,25 – She makes linen clothes and sells them and provides belts to the merchants. She is strong and is respected by the people. She looks forward to the future with joy.

So here you see it. She was a business woman too. What idea do you have, start working on it. This woman was securing a future of joy for herself. She was working this hard to make sure she has a good retirement. Whats your retirement plan? To be struggling in old age or relaxing?

  • Father, I receive insight for my future today. All that I need to do now to secure a joyful future, show me Lord. Give me strength to work hard now towards our future in the name of Jesus. I refuse to struggle in old age. I receive uncommon knowledge at things that will keep paying me in old age when I can no longer work in Jesus name.

Vs. 26 – She speaks wise words and teaches others to be kind.

Can people come to you to share with you? what do you teach those around you?

  • Father, I pray that I will be filled with your wisdom to be able to help those around me. When I share with them, let it be wise and kind words. Lord may men/women look at me and learn from me. Let my life be the bible they read and let it guide them even without me saying a word. All to your glory in Jesus Name.

Vs. 27-29 – She watches over her family and never wastes her time. Her children speak well of her. Her husband also praises her, saying, “There are many fine women, but you are better than all of them.”

This is the joy of every wife and mom. To have your family appreciate what you do and speak well of you and praise you and bless you. Its also a joy to know this and see it and experience it.

  • Father, as I do everything in my power to be a great wife and mom to my husband and children respectively, I pray they see and acknowledge all that I do. My joy will be full in knowing that I am a blessing in the life of my family in Jesus name.

Vs. 30 – Charm can fool you, and beauty can trick you, but a woman who respects the Lord should be praised.

The beauty of any woman begins from the heart. If your heart is ugly, with time, we would know. Your physical beauty cannot hide the state of beauty of your heart.

  • Father, I pray to never stop being beautiful in my heart. I will remain in the beauty of your holiness. I remain at the center of your will. For everyday of my life, Jesus you are in charge of me and everyone who comes around me will see you in and through me.

Vs. 31 – Give her the reward she has earned; she should be praised in public for what she has done.

  • Father, I receive my reward for all my hard work. The world will know of me for my contributions. I will be rewarded and awarded by even those who do not know me in Jesus name.

  • Finally, Lord, upon this altar, I decree and declare that on the day of my reward, I will be present, alive and well. None shall take my place in Jesus mighty name.

If you prayed this long prayer, I congratulate you. As much as I was tempted to share into two part, I was all the more prompted to share all with you.

Please always come back and pray this prayers from time to time.

Thank you for joining today. See you for the last day of this challenge at 9.00 GMT.

Blessings.
